The Farewell Blues

The Farewell Blues

Eyes low, Glass full,
The taste of a burnt out cigarette,
and fresh red velvet lipstick on my lips
Bottle empty
Heart full of joys and regrets
I sit here alone again
End over end
Always finding myself here
Every damn time
Sitting and thinking
Always,
Memories of yesterday creep in
Hopes for tomorrows disappear into the night
The sinking feeling of the down pouring rain
Rushes into my veins as I down another shot, another bottle, another glass
The bartender gives me another refill as I light another torch in this endless night,
I don’t even have to ask for another round,
He knows
It’s just another one of those nights ya know,
Stuck here at your local bar at midnight,
Drinking it all away,
while the band plays a nice smooth melody  for you,
A slow serenade to this crowd of one,
It’s Soft but sad,
Soothing but troublesome,
Ain’t it beautiful,
She was beautiful,
I’m just a regular here down at good ole Joe’s tavern on 20th street,
Past the broken gates, the burning tires, and under the old bridge,
Not many people come here, just the regular crowd that shuffles in from a hard days work,
Tired and Broken,
Ah that saxophone, the way Jimmy boy plays it, Just listen, You can hear his soul
Calming and cool,
Well this is where I sit, this is where I think and bullshit it all away,
The place I feel most comfortable, most relaxed,
Damn this regret,
Damn this night,
Damn this drink,
Damn this life,
Why’d she had to go,
I’m such an idiot,
Played like fool,
Lulu, that was her name,
Sweet thing,
She was beautiful,
She was a goddess in this town of rats and losers,
Her long golden hair,
Her luscious red lips,
A figure like one of those Greek sculptures you find in a museum on display,
What a dame,
She was perfect,
And I lost perfection tonight,
And here I am,
Alone,
Heartbroken,
Sharing drink with my good old friends, Johnny Walker, Jack Daniels and Jim Beam
I can always count on these guys,
Well you know how Billy J puts it
We all share a drink we call loneliness, it’s better than drinking alone, Ya know?
It’s just me this time,
That’s my story,
A young drunk in this bar of misfits, stow aways, and alcohols
Drinking his sorrows away, no direction, no guidance, no purpose,
Well it looks like the rain is clearing up,
I’d better head out,
Grab my coat, leave Joe a nice tip,
Grab a taxi and head on home,
And just wait for the sunrise and those clear  blue skies,
The Farewell blues,
That’s what I got,
I’ll see you around, Lulu,
I’ll see you around kid,
What a Dame.
